Understanding the legal warranty of conformity
In France, any item bought from a professional seller is covered by the legal warranty of conformity, which runs for 2 years from delivery of the goods (article L.217-3 of the French Consumer Code). It is free and mandatory, on top of any commercial warranty offered by the seller or the manufacturer.
What does it cover?
It protects you when a product has a conformity defect: a breakdown, a malfunction, or a difference from the description or the expected use. During the first 24 months, the defect is presumed to have existed at the time of purchase — it is up to the seller to prove otherwise.
What can you ask for?
- Repair or replacement of the product, free of charge.
- Failing that, a price reduction or a full refund.
- You are never required to go through the manufacturer’s commercial warranty instead.
